Three times the size of Belgium, Iceland lies just below the Arctic Circle, halfway between Europe and North America. In the height of summer, this ‘land of ice,’ as the Vikings named it, welcomes tens of thousands of birds that come to breed: the Arctic tern, a migrant that can travel over 80,000 km a year; the northern fulmar with its unusual beak; and the iconic puffin with its harsh call.

Iceland is also the land of the Arctic fox, the island’s only native mammal. White in the winter snow, brown in summer, the Arctic fox is a remarkable acrobat, effortlessly navigating the steep northern cliffs. A rare eye-to-eye encounter, captured in touching and exceptional images.

For this new adventure of Nature Next Door, Tanguy takes us 10,000 km from home—to South America, in Ecuador, at the foot of the Andes, deep inside a canyon where we find the only bear species on the continent: the Andean bear.

Also called the spectacled bear, it is one of the rarest and most endangered species on Earth. Arboreal and vegetarian, it feeds only on fruits and plants and can be identified by its unique facial markings, as distinctive as human fingerprints. Agile and solitary, it lives high in the valley trees. Thanks to Danilo, a farmer and passionate protector of spectacled bears, Tanguy follows Yoyo, a one-and-a-half-year-old cub struggling to survive in a world where humans and deforestation pose the greatest threat to its species. Today, only a few thousand individuals remain.
